Current Work
The current research within the MEDIACITY Project aims at investigating how the social settings and spaces of the city are created, experienced and practiced through the use and presence of new media. We take the position that new media enables different settings, practices and behaviours to occur in urban space. These media create opportunities for diverse forms of connections between people and spaces and enable and create flows; of information, of communication and of knowledge. In this sense the fellows decided to focus on a study of three aspects:
- The role of media as enabling communication and interaction within urban settings, and its transformative possibilities for the experience of the city
- The existing forms of social involvement in a specific urban context that may be supported, enriched, or hindered by the use of media and technologies
- The interactions between spatial mobility and formation of communities in urban settings considering the nature of mobility in the contemporary city
As a consequence, they organized the common research around three key themes: situations, practices and encounters. These will investigate the types of settings for interaction, the processes which people adopt and develop to mediate social experience, and changing behaviours in public space.
